Numbers 28
1 And the LORD spoke to Moses saying, 2 Command the children of Israel and say to them, Be careful to offer to me my offerings, my food offerings, my burnt offerings as a sweet aroma to Me, in their appointed seasons. 3 And say to them, This is the offering by fire which you are to offer to the LORD; two lambs of the first year without spot day by day, for a continual burnt offering. 4 Offer one lamb in the morning, and the other lamb at evening; 5 And a two quarts of flour for a food offering, mixed with a quart of olive oil. 6 It is a continual burnt offering, which was ordained in mount Sinai for a sweet fragrance, a sacrifice made by fire to the LORD.
- These animal sacrifices were a display of God’s love to be poured out in the death of His Son for the sins of man.
- Man was to continually remember God’s unspeakable love. _
- John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming to him and said, Behold the Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world.
7 And its drink offering will be a quart for the one lamb: cause the strong wine to be poured to the LORD for a drink offering. 8 And offer the other lamb at evening: you are to offer it like the grain offering of the morning, and like its drink offering, a sacrifice made by fire, a sweet fragrance to the LORD. 9 And on the Sabbath day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two quarts of flour for a grain offering, mixed with oil, and its drink offering: 10.This is the burnt offering every Sabbath, beside the continual burnt offering, and its drink offering.
- Wine is a symbol of the joy that man will feel in the presence of God. This was a daily testimony. The grain offering represented Christ as the bread of life.
- Psalm 16:11 You will show me the path of life: in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
- John 6:35 And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life: he that comes to me will never hunger; and he that believes on me will never thirst.
11 And in the beginnings of your months you are to offer a burnt offering to the LORD; two young bulls, one ram, seven lambs of the first year without spot, 12 And five quarts of flour for a grain offering, mixed with oil, for one bull; and three quarts of flour for a grain offering, mixed with oil, for one ram; 13 And two quarts of flour mixed with oil for a grain offering to one lamb; for a burnt offering, a sweet fragrance, a sacrifice made by fire to the LORD. 14 And their drink offerings will be two quarts of wine to a bull, and two and a half pints to a ram, and quart for each lamb: this is the burnt offering every month throughout the months of the year. 15 And one kid of the goats is to be offered for a sin offering to the LORD, beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering.
- Everyday, morning and evening, offerings to God were made at the tabernacle.
- And at the beginning of each month.
- These were recognition of God, who He is and what He does for us.
- At the last supper Jesus, knowing that He was going to pay for all the sins of the world the next day, changed the ritual to be communion service of bread and wine.
- The book of Hebrews explains why it would be very wrong to continue offering the animal sacrifices after Christ’s death for our sins was accomplished.
- Now we read God’s word and pray daily, morning and evening, if possible, attend worship services that include the communion service of bread and wine.
God has passed over our sins
16 The fourteenth day of the first month is the Passover of the LORD. 17 In the fifteenth day of this month is the feast: seven days unleavened bread will be eaten. 18 The first day will be a holy assembly; you are to do none of your regular work: 19 But offer a sacrifice made by fire for a burnt offering to the LORD; two young bulls, one ram, and seven lambs of the first year: they will be without blemish: 20 And their food offering will be of flour mixed with oil: five quarts for a bull, and three quart for a ram; 21 offer a tenth of an ephah for each of the seven lambs: 22 And one goat for a sin offering, to make an atonement for you.
- ‘Doing no work’ teaches man that he can do nothing to save himself.
- Only God’s work for us is good enough.
- 1 Corinthians 5:7 Purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, as you are unleavened. For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us:
23 Offer these beside the burnt offering in the morning, which is for a continual burnt
offering. 24 In this way you are to offer daily, throughout the seven days, the food of the sacrifice made by fire, a sweet fragrance to the LORD: it will be offered beside the continual burnt
offering, and his drink offering. 25 And on the seventh day you are to have a holy assembly; you are to do none of your regular work. 26 Also in the day of the first fruits, when you bring a new
grain offering to the LORD, after your weeks are done, you are to have a holy assembly; you are to do none of your regular work: 27 But offer the burnt offering for a sweet fragrance to the LORD; two
young bulls, one ram, seven lambs of the first year; 28 And their grain offering of flour mixed with oil, five quarts with each bull, three quarts with each ram, 29. two quarts with each of the seven
lambs; 30 and one kid of the goats, to make an atonement for you. 31 Offer these in addition to the continual burnt offering, and his grain offering, (they are to be without blemish) and their drink
offerings.
- The offerings were to be without blemish because the Savior that they foreshadowed is without blemish.
- Giving God the first fruits taught that God is to be first in our lives. Putting God first is the only way to be truly and completely happy.
- Atonement means covering.
- Remember in Genesis 3, after man and woman sinned, that God made them coats of skins to cover their nakedness.
- It is honor beyond imagining that God, the Maker of the universe wants to be with us.
- Matthew 1:23 Behold, a virgin will be with child, bare a son, and they will call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
Numbers 29
1 And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you are to have a holy assembly; you will do no laboring work: it is a day of blowing the trumpets. 2 And you are to offer a burnt offering for a sweet aroma to the LORD; one young bull, one ram, and seven lambs of the first year without blemish: 3 And their grain offering will be of flour mixed with oil, five quarts with the bull, and three quarts with the ram, 4 And two quarts with each of the seven lambs. 5 And one kid of the goats for a sin offering, to make atonement for you: 6.Beside the burnt offering of the month, and his grain offering, and the daily burnt offering, and his grain offering, and their drink offerings, according to their manner, for a sweet aroma, a sacrifice made by fire to the LORD.
- The offerings were a memorial of God’s sacrifice for us.
- Our remembrance of His Son’s death for us is sweet to Him.
- The lambs represented the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
- The flour represented the Bread of Heaven, Christ.
- The oil represented the Holy Spirit.
- John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming unto him, and said, Behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world.
- John 6:35 Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. He that comes to me will never hunger, he that believes on me will never thirst.
7 And on the tenth day of this seventh month you are to have a holy assembly; you are to humble your souls: do no work in it: 8 But offer a burnt offering to the LORD for a sweet aroma; one young bull, one ram, and seven lambs of the first year; they are to be without blemish for you: 9 And their grain offering will be of flour mixed with oil, five quarts for the bull, and three quarts with the one ram, 10 and two quarts for each of the seven lambs: 11 One kid of the goats for a sin offering; beside the sin offering of atonement, and the continual burnt offering, and the grain offering of it, and their drink offerings. 12 And on the fifteenth day of the seventh month you are to have a holy assembly; you are to do no laboring work; you are to keep a feast to the LORD seven days: 13 And offer a burnt offering, a sacrifice made by fire, a sweet aroma to the LORD; thirteen young bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year; they will be without blemish: 14 And their grain offering will be of flour mixed with oil, five quarts for every bull of the thirteen bulls, three quarts to each ram of the two rams, 15 And two quarts to each lamb of the fourteen lambs: 16 And one kid of the goats for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, his grain offering, and his drink offering.
- God set aside one day each year for remorse for our sins.
- The rest of the year was for celebration.
- He specified the offerings that were to be brought to Him.
- At the last supper Christ changed the celebrations to our communion service.
- Is it possible to remember too often what God did for us in Christ?
17 And on the second day offer twelve young bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without spot: 18 And their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls for the rams, and for the lambs, will be according to their number, by the ordinance: 19 And one kid of the goats for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, and its grain offering, and their drink offerings. 20 And on the third day eleven bulls, two rams, fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish; 21 And their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, will be according to their number, by the ordinance: 22 And one goat for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, and his grain offering, and his drink offering. 23 And on the fourth day ten bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish:
- All these portray Christ Jesus, the impeccable, without blemish Son of God.
24 Their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, will be according to their number, by the ordinance: 25 And one kid of the goats for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, his grain offering, and his drink offering. 26 And on the fifth day nine bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without spot: 27 And their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, will be according to their number, by the ordinance: 28 And one goat for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, and his grain offering, and his drink offering. 29 And on the sixth day eight bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish: 30 And their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, will be according to their number, by the ordinance: 31 And one goat for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, his grain offering, and his drink offering. 32 And on the seventh day seven bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish: 33 And their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, will be according to their number, by the ordinance: 34 And one goat for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, his grain offering, and his drink offering.
God is our rest—He has done all our works for us
35 On the eighth day have a solemn assembly: do no laboring work in it: 36 But offer a burnt offering, a sacrifice made by fire, a sweet aroma to the LORD: one bull, one ram, seven lambs of the first year without blemish: 37 Their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bull, for the ram, and for the lambs, will be according to their number, by the ordinance: 38 And one goat for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, and his grain offering, and his drink offering. 39 Do these things to the LORD in your set feasts, beside your vows, your freewill offerings, your burnt offerings, your grain offerings, your drink offerings, and your peace offerings. 40 And Moses told the children of Israel according to all that the LORD commanded Moses.
- They weren’t allowed to work on these days—they were to look at God’s work.
- These feast days were like a citywide, nationwide BBQ with the tabernacle as the center and God as the host.
- Only on this Day of Atonement were they allowed to mourn for their sins.
- This is the day that the high priest took the blood into the holy of holies and sprinkled in on the altar.
- He made all things (Genesis 1).
- He gives life and breath (Acts 17:24-28).
- He died for our sins (John 1:29, 1 Peter 2:24).
- He works all our works for us. _
- Isaiah 26:12 LORD, you will ordain peace for us: for you also have worked all our works in us.
- Isaiah 25:6 And in this mountain the LORD of hosts will make to all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined.
Numbers 30
God forgives broken vows
1 And Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes concerning the children of Israel saying, This is the thing that the LORD has commanded. 2 If a man vows a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he is not to break/profane his word, he will do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth. 3 If a woman also vows a vow to the LORD, and binds herself by a bond, being in her father's house in her youth; 4 And her father hears her vow, her bond with which she has bound her soul, and her father holds his peace at her: then all her vows will stand: the bond with which she has bound her soul will stand. 5 But if her father disallows her in the day that he hears; none of her vows, her bonds with which she has bound her soul, will stand: and the LORD will forgive her because her father disallowed her. 6 And if she had a husband at all when she vowed, or uttered anything out of her lips with which she bound her soul; 7 And her husband heard it, and held his peace at her in the day that he heard it: then her vows will stand, her bonds with which she bound her soul will stand.
- God expects us to keep our promises to Him (Ecclesiastes 5:4).
8 But if her husband disallowed her on the day that he heard it; then he will make her vow which she vowed, that which she uttered with her lips, with which she bound her soul, of no effect: and the LORD will forgive her. 9 But every vow of a widow, and of her that is divorced, with which they have bound their souls, will stand against her. 10 And if she vowed in her husband's house, or bound her soul by a bond with an oath; 11 And her husband heard it, and held his peace at her, and did not disallowed her: then all her vows will stand; every bond with which she bound her soul will stand. 12 But if her husband has utterly made them void on the day he heard them then whatever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning the bond of her soul, will not stand: her husband has made them void; and the LORD will forgive her. 13 Every vow, and every binding oath to humble the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void. 14 But if her husband altogether holds his peace at her from day to day; then he establishes all her vows, or all her bonds, which are upon her: he confirms them, because he held his peace at her in the day that he heard them. 15 But if he in any ways make them void after that he has heard them; then he will bear her iniquity. 16 These are the statutes, which the LORD commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, between the father and his daughter, still in her youth in her father's house.
- Think back to the Garden of Eden and Eve’s unwise decision to understand God’s mercy in this (1 Timothy 2:14).
- Psalm 57:10 For your love is great unto the heavens, and your truth unto the clouds.
